Cost of living and currency
Compared with the European standard of living Egypt is a cheap holiday country. For example in Dahab it is no problem to have dinner for € 7.
The official currency is the Egyptian pound (LE), in Arabic: Guinea. A pound consists of 100 piaster (pt). The most common banknotes are 5 LE, 10 LE, 20 LE, 50 LE 100 and LE.
Apart from many banks, there are several cash dispensers in Dahab. Travelers checks are not recommended because they are very difficult to change, and even with a credit card is not possible to pay everywhere.
In an emergency you can also always pay in Euros. This is not advisable due to a variable and not always favorable exchange rate.
In December 2010 one would get eight Egyptian pounds for one Euro.
